April 29th, 2008 by Alex Jeffery
When you love classic cars as much as we do at Sureterm Direct Insurance, it’s very easy to be intoxicated by them. This list could help you take off the “beer goggles” and see the classic car for what it really is and what it might do to your budget.
• Ask to see all paperwork and documentation.
• Make sure the VIN matches other VIN’s on the classic car and paperwork (original/no alterations)
• If the classic car has been restored, ask for any pictures taken before, during and after
• Check the service history for repairs, oil changes and scheduled maintenance
• Start the car.
• Check for smoke coming from the exhaust
• Take the car for a road test and thoroughly test the steering, gear box, clutch, brakes
• Listen for engine noise at high and low speeds
• Check all the dials and gauges
• Check everywhere for rust
• Visually inspect for repairs or damage
• Check all the lights
• If at any time during your inspection the seller tries to point you in a different area of the car or wants you to take their “word” that something is in good working condition, that’s a signal to look more closely.
• Completed checklists like this will ensure that you have a good understanding of the classic car’s imperfections.
• Make notes on everything and discuss what you find with a trusted mechanic. He can then provide an estimate on any repair costs to assist in your negotiations with the seller.
• Get a classic car insurance quote from Sureterm by calling our classic car specialists on 0800 999 2030 and we won’t charge you for the call.
