The Jeep Patriot – a big success story
May 19th, 2008 by Alex Jeffery
It’s already won a green award as 4×4 of the year by specialist magazines 4×4 and MPV Driver and has sold 2,000 in the UK in under a year. So our 4×4 fanatics here at Sureterm Direct Insurance were delighted to see that the cheapest 4×4 on the block has had a few tweaks to smarten up the interior trim for the 2008 model.
The Patriot is aimed at families who want all the style of a genuine Jeep. It can perform off-road yet more importantly is just as comfortable on day-to-day driving.
The Patriot is a classic 4×4 Jeep, but the interior remains somewhat basic — which seems in keeping with its heritage. Some of the materials lack quality, but the chrome console-mounted gearstick and two-tone upholstery make up for the swathes of plastic. There’s good head and legroom in the front and back with a potential 1,357 litres of space with the back seats folded down.
Two Patriot trim levels are available — Sport and Limited — with two engine choices: Volkswagen’s 138bhp 2-litre six-speed manual diesel or a 168bhp 2.4-litre petrol with five-speed manual or CVT auto gearbox.
For genuine off-roaders, tick the right options boxes and you’ll get the Patriot with full-time four-wheel-drive, a low-ratio transfer gear, 230mm of ground clearance, skid plates, hill-descent control and chunky tow hooks. But this is aimed at family use so the Patriot boasts tons of safety features including side-curtain airbags, and delivers fuel economy of 42.2mpg for the 2-litre diesel, which is impressive for a soft-roader.
