The Most Powerful Production Hilux
June 15th, 2008 by Alex Jeffery
The Toyota Hilux hit the headlines last year when a modified example became the first vehicle to be driven to the Magnetic North Pole. And now it can claim new records thanks to the launch of a limited edition ‘high-performance’ version.
Known simply as the High Power Hilux, just 500 examples of the modified truck will be available when it goes on sale this summer. The show model was finished in black with a set of 15-inch alloys and a stainless steel mesh grille to distinguish it from the flagship Hilux Invincible.
The High Power Hilux shares the same 3.0-litre common-rail turbo-diesel as the Invincible, but sees power increased by 15% (to 197bhp) thanks to a Toyota Motorsport diesel performance kit. That’s enough to make it the UK’s most powerful production pick-up truck.
Torque has also increased, rising to a whopping 317lb.ft producing between 1600rpm and 3200rpm – handy for towing essential lifestyle kit such as powerboats or caravans. When it’s not being used as a tow truck, Toyota reckons the High Power Hilux will reach 62mph from rest in just 10.5 seconds, 2.5 seconds quicker than a Hilux Invincible.
Toyota is keeping quiet about pricing and specification at present, except to say that the interior is trimmed in two-tone grey leather and features heated front seats. Buyers will be able to choose from manual or automatic transmission.
