4×4 Jargon – What does it all mean?
Have you ever wondered what on earth the presenters on Top Gear or Fifth Gear are talking about when they are comparing 4×4’s? Our specialists here at Sureterm talk about 4×4’s every day, so they thought they would come up with some handy explanations to words that are being bantered around.
What is Active Height Control (AHC)? – It’s adjustable suspension height allowing for varied road conditions or driving style.
What does an anti-lock brake system (ABS) do? – It senses when a wheel is about to lock and releases brake pressure automatically to prevent a skid.
What is a bleed nipple? – A valve on a hydraulic component which can be opened to release trapped air. Also known as a bleed screw.
What is a Constant Velocity (CV) Joint?- A type of universal joint which allows power to be transmitted through an angle without vibration
What is a Diff Lock? – A differential which can be locked such that both wheels are driven, regardless of the traction each wheel is obtaining.
What is an Electronic Control Unit (ECU)? – A computer which controls such things as ignition and fuel systems on your 4×4.
And what about an engine management system? – A computer which manages the fuel injection and ignition systems in an integrated way.
What about an Intelligent Battery System (IBS)? – This provides in-car management of multiple batteries used to power winches and fridges etc.
What is a live axle? – An axle which transmits power to the wheels. A 4×4 has 2 live axles.
What is a snorkel? – This moves the engine air intake to outside the bonnet and raises it above likely levels of dust, sand and water.
And what is Variable Gear Ratio Steering? – This adjusts the steering gear ratio on your 4×4 according to vehicle speed, therefore moderating how much the steering wheel needs to be turned.
