The greenest SUV yet goes on sale

Car manufacturer Toyota has announced a stack of improvements for the new 2009 RAV4 4×4, including an improved turbo diesel engine that now emits CO2 levels of just 154g/km.
These changes makes the 2.2-litre RAV4 D-4D 150 the lowest emitting 4×4 currently on sale in the market, overtaking the Ford Kuga which was the previous greenest 4×4.
The RAV4 not only sees CO2 emissions fall 11% from 173g/km to 154g/km and fuel economy improve 14% from a 42.8mpg official average to 48.7mpg, the happy side effect is a boost in power. The D-4D now produces 148bhp and 250lb ft of torque (pulling power), a 10% increase in both cases.
The revised RAV4 is also available with an automatic gearbox for the first time – though you pay a substantial efficiency penalty for choosing the auto – CO2 emissions rise to 189g/km and fuel economy drops to 39.2mpg.
