2009 Sales for Classic Cars at RM Auctions
December 17th, 2009 by Alex Jeffery
This year could be seen as positive for sales of classic vehicles. RM Auctions is said to be the largest collector car auction house and this year celebrated its 30th anniversary. For 2009, RM has generated over $190 million US (approx. £117 million) in sales from over 1,450 cars.
Among the year’s highlights was the World record breaking sale for the highest price achieved at auction. The car in question was a 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa, which sold in Maranello, Italy in May for $12.4 million.
Other record breakers over the year included:
• A 1950 Aston Martin DB2 Team Car which sold for $910,745 at a London event in October.
• A 1952 Jaguar C-Type establishing a world record for any C-Type, selling for $2,530,000 at a Sports & Classics of Monterey event in August.
• A Ford Model 18 Deluxe Three-Window Coupe which doubled its original estimate, selling for a record price for a Ford Model 18 of $165,000 at the Automobiles of Amelia Island sale.
Overall, RM holds five of the top 10 records for the most expensive motor cars ever sold at auction, with four of these in the top 5.
“The market for ‘quality’ motor cars – exceptional, rare examples with important provenance and documentation – remains stable, with outstanding cars continuing to attract great prices at auction.” said Ian Kelleher, President and Chief Operating Officer, RM Auctions.
