An endurance test for any 4×4 off road vehicle, the Dakar Rally pushes the boundaries racing across a diverse range of terrain. The rally first started in 1978 and ran from Paris to Dakar in Senegal, Africa. In 2009, the rally was moved to South America which was the first time it had been held outside of Europe and Africa. For 2010 it will return to South Africa running from the 1st – 17th January.

For enthusiasts of the event who have an iphone, Volkswagen has launched a new free of charge application about the Dakar Rally under the name ‘Volkswagen Rally mobile – 2010 Dakar’. The application is reported to send news, results, videos and background information to the user e.g. detailed stage information and maps before and during the Rally.

A reported comment by Volkswagen Motorsport Director, Kris Nissen said ‘Volkswagen has always stood for innovations in motorsport,’…..‘At the last Dakar Rally, we were the first automobile manufacturer to win the event with diesel power and the Scirocco Cup, launching next year will be the world’s first one-make cup to use eco-conscious Bio-CNG (bio-compressed natural gas). The iPhone application for the Volkswagen’s involvement in the Dakar is unique in the world of rally racing to date as well and offers users of the cult mobile the chance to stay informed about current Dakar events around the clock.”
